Grade 9 to 12 students: Join a Brampton Library CanHack Team!
What is CanHack?
CanHack is a fun, capture-the-flag style online game designed to help high school students gain fundamental experience in computer forensics, cryptography, web security and more. Students will reverse engineer, break, hack and decrypt to solve challenges in order to advance in the game.
CanHack is open to any Canadian high school student from grades 9 to 12. The game goes live over a two-week period in March 2021 and there is special programming leading up to the launch. There is no cost to participate, nor do students need any prior experience with coding or cybersecurity.
CanHack is the Canadian arm of picoCTF, a free online cybersecurity competition developed by Carnegie Mellon University. CanHack is presented by DMZ at Ryerson University, in partnership with RBC.
Workshops & Meetups
Leading up to the challenge (October to February), registered students gain exclusive access to live expert-led workshops on Wednesdays, 5-7pm, to advance their skills in cyber security (Can’t make Wednesdays? Don’t worry—you’ll have access to the recordings). Brampton Library is also hosting weekly meetups on Monday afternoons 4-6pm on Discord to help students prepare for success in the CanHack competition.
Workshop topics include:
- Computer forensics
- Web security
- Women in cyber
- Reverse engineering
- Binary exploitation
Prizes & Recognition!
CanHack participants have a chance to win over $15,000 in cash prizes! An additional $2,000 prize will be awarded to an all-female team.
In addition to the CanHack game, participants will be invited to complete cybersecurity exams to earn digital badges to display on their résumé or LinkedIn profile to show off their skills.
In order to compete, students must:
- Be enrolled at a Candian high school
- Participate individually or with a team of no more than 5 other students. Brampton Library staff will help organize teams.
- Be registered with an adult supervisor, e.g. a Brampton Library Librarian
