Roots of Reading
Brampton Library's Roots of Reading programs are designed to promote early and family literacy in an environment that encourages a love of reading and lifelong learning. These programs - offered specifically for babies, toddlers, preschoolers and families - highlight the six early literacy skills essential for children to learn in order to read and write. Each program combines age appropriate stories, songs, fingerplays and action rhymes. All programs are free and offered on a drop-in basis, and children must be accompanied by an adult caregiver.

Babies (Early Talkers)
Brampton Library's Roots of Reading Early Talkers offerings for babies up to 24 months introduce book sharing between caregivers and infants, enabling them to experience interactions around books that are truly pleasurable. This effort is in response to research that shows that a strong, positive bond between infant and their caregivers leads to more frequent and positive experiences around books. The Library also offers, in partnership with the Bramalea-Gore-Malton-Springdale Ontario Early Years Centre, two other special programs for infants: Babies in Playland and Infant Mother Goose. For more information on dates and times, click here to view our Kids Calendar.

Toddlers (Talkers)
Children's experience with books plays an important role in school readiness. Brampton Library's Roots of Reading offerings for toddlers focus on picture book reading that provides many of the skills needed for school readiness: vocabulary, sound and story structure, sustained attention, the pleasure of learning, and more. Children who are read to three times a week or more do much better in later development than children who aren't, and how we read to our kids is as important as how often. Our program focuses on the needs of two and three year olds, engaging them and also teaching caregivers how to encourage and facilitate learning.

Preschoolers (Pre-Readers)
Brampton Library's Roots of Reading offerings for preschoolers prepare Pre-Readers for success in school. Focusing on such things as phonological awareness promotes the development of reading as children begin to understand that words are made up of smaller sounds. Stories, as well as language games and activities geared to build vocabulary give four and five year olds the tools they need to be fully ready to learn to read.

Families
Brampton Library's Roots of Reading offerings for families focus on developing a love of books and reading between parents and their children aged birth through five, though children of all ages are welcome to join their siblings for stories, songs, action rhymes and more.
